PCU-USA

Degree Status & Accreditation

Legal authority, religious scope and external use of PCU-USA degrees.

Legal standing and degree authority

Under Indiana Code §§ 21-18.5-6-2 and 21-18.5-6-2.5, religious institutions offering instruction or programs of a clearly religious nature are excepted from the authorization and accreditation requirements in those sections. PCU-USA operates within that statutory category and lawfully confers valid degrees in clearly religious fields under Indiana law.

Nature of the degrees

PCU-USA’s degree programs are expressly religious in character and focus on study within the Catholic intellectual tradition. The University’s authority in this context does not represent governmental or ecclesiastical sponsorship or endorsement.

Accreditation

Accreditation is a voluntary, nongovernmental quality-review process in the United States. PCU-USA is not currently accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education. This status does not make the institution or its clearly religious degree programs unlawful.

External acceptance and professional use

A receiving institution, employer, licensing authority or other jurisdiction determines whether it accepts a particular credit, certificate or degree for its own purposes. Students should check the relevant requirements before enrolling when they intend to transfer credit, seek licensure or use a degree outside Indiana.
