Attendance and Online Engagement

Meaningful participation, absence, deadlines and communication in online courses.

Official institutional policy

01

Meaningful participation

In an online course, attendance means academically meaningful participation: submitting work, contributing to required discussion, attending a required live session, completing an assessment or communicating substantively with the instructor about course content. Logging in, opening a page or receiving an email alone does not establish attendance.

02

Absence and deadlines

Students must follow the course schedule and promptly communicate circumstances that affect participation. An extension or alternative activity is not automatic; it depends on the timing, evidence where reasonably requested, learning objectives and fairness to the class. Approved accommodations and formally granted extensions control over general deadlines.

03

Nonparticipation

Sustained nonparticipation may trigger outreach, an academic warning or administrative withdrawal after notice. The record must distinguish withdrawal from a completed course result. Students remain responsible for using the official withdrawal process and should not assume that silence automatically removes them from a course.
